Michael was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on June 22, 1950. He was raised in Sioux City, Iowa, where he attended Bishop Heelan Catholic High School (1968) and Morningside College (1972). He graduated from The University of Iowa College of Law in 1975 (High Distinction, Order of Coif).

Michael then returned to Sioux City, Iowa, where he joined the firm of Kindig, Beebe, McCluhan & Rawlings. He became a partner in 1978 and has been a member of that firm ever since.

Michael became a member of the Iowa Academy of Trial Lawyers in 1994 and the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2001.

Michael has been President of the Woodbury County Bar Association. He is a member of the Iowa Defense Counsel Association and served as its President in 2001-2002. He has given numerous litigation-related presentations at the annual meetings of the Iowa Defense Counsel Association and the Iowa Academy of Trial Lawyers. He serves on the Board of Editors of "Defense Update," a quarterly publication of the Iowa Defense counsel. He has written several articles for this publication.

Michael is engaged in the general practice of law, including but not limited to medical malpractice and litigation, personal injury, commercial law, and employment law. Michael has briefed and/or argued approximately 40 appeals in the Iowa Supreme Court, Nebraska Supreme Court, and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Michael is admitted in the State and Federal Courts in Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Michael also has extensive community involvement. He currently sits on the Board of the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra, Briar Cliff University, and the Downtown Kiwanis Club, and is also on the parish council for Nativity Catholic Church. Michael is married and has three adult children. Michael’s other outside interests include reading, riding his motorcycle, working out, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
